Depends what you are buying. The famous light beams appear in Upper roughly late March through mid October, strongest in the late-spring-to-summer stretch, so beam chasers aim for that window at midday. Shoulder months bring thinner crowds and easier bookings, with no beams. Monsoon season, roughly mid-June through September, adds cancellation risk. No. Every walking section, Upper, Lower, Canyon X and the rest, sits on Navajo Nation land where entry is permitted only with an authorized Navajo tour operator; there is no self-guided option and no walking up without a booked slot. The walks themselves are short: about an hour inside Lower or Canyon X, and roughly 75 minutes and up for Upper's options. Upper is the flat, easy walk with the seasonal midday light beams and the biggest crowds. Lower is the ladder canyon: five flights of stairs down into narrower, more sculpted passages, usually at a lower price, with the deepest review base of any section. Age minimums are set by each operator and typically land in the 5 to 8 range depending on the section, so check the age line on your listing before booking. Terrain decides the rest: Upper's flat sandy floor suits small children best, while Lower's stairs and ladders reward surer feet. Plan on no. The walking tours restrict bags, backpacks and tripods in the canyon, a rule tightened alongside the end of the old dedicated photography tours, so most visitors carry a phone or camera and nothing else. Page, Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, while the surrounding Navajo Nation observes daylight saving. In summer, two clocks a few miles apart disagree by an hour, and tour check-ins have been missed over it. Confirm with your operator which clock your departure uses, set your phone to update by location, and build in slack the morning of your tour.

The risk is real and is exactly why the rules exist. In 1997 a flash flood in the lower canyon killed 11 people, driven by rain that fell miles upstream. Today operators monitor weather across the whole drainage and cancel tours whenever storms threaten, most often in monsoon season from roughly mid-June through September. Midday, if light is your priority. Both famous sections are lit from openings overhead, so the higher the sun, the more color reaches the floor; Upper's beams are strictly a midday event in season, and Lower's prime-time entries sell the same logic. Morning and late-afternoon slots trade glow for softer color and easier availability. Whatever the hour, the canyon photographs better than it has any right to.
